Taylor Family Digital Library
Construction
The major structural concrete work on the 6-storey 265,000 square foot library was completed in April 2009. A full-time crew of over 120 skilled men and women have placed over 10,000 m3 of concrete and 1.3 million kgs of reinforcing steel, giving the TFDL's concrete structure a total mass of well over 26 thousand metric tonnes of concrete and steel.
Steel work to the top floor is underway and is scheduled to be complete by mid-June, followed by the steel work to the extended two-storey lower podium area and the +15 link to the existing library complex.
From the exterior of the building, you can see large panes of opaque and clear glass installed on levels one and two of the south and east sides of the building. These installations are a significant visible milestone for the campus community. Approximately 150 of 1,200 panels of the pre-glazed curtain wall system are now installed. The level 3 curtain wall will be complete by the end of June, and additional wall and ceiling framing and drywall boarding and taping will proceed.
Many of the full height walls have been framed throughout the building. Mechanical and electrical rough-ins are progressing up the building.
The support slab for the rooftop air handling units has been poured, and the Engineered Air units will be delivered to site and hoisted to the roof within the coming month. The two smaller air handling units that serve the NAM gallery and special collections spaces are already on site and are being hung from the underside of the level 2 concrete slab.
The south tower crane will be removed in June marking another major milestone in the construction process.
Nickle Arts Museum
The extension of the existing University Theatre wall and the new Nickle Arts Museum gallery steel structure has been erected along with the metal roof deck and exterior wall framing and exterior drywall board.
The new gallery will capture the unique scalloped board-formed exterior concrete wall of the University Theatre as an interior wall within the new Nickle Arts Museum gallery.
Taylor Family Quadrangle
The quad development is progressing with a number of design meetings scheduled for this week. The review team includes the Vice President Facilities Management and Development and the Director of Sustainability. Elements of the design are being shaped by - and are shaping -
the overall campus master planning exercise now underway. We anticipate completion of a schematic design in the month of June. Actual construction of the Taylor Quad will occur in the summer of 2010.
